The New York School Movement first began in the early 1960's, this was known as the first generation. Within this first generation the poets of this time frame focused on the works of surrealism and modernism. Their work was often serious but with an ironic twist, and often incorporated urban sensibility. Along this time period art movements were large within New York especially abstract expressionism, which included strong artistic and personal relationships between the artists and poets.
